Too many of you guys have been meeting me with consternation on your faces about the presentation to be made Saturday, March 31.
Come on, guys, grow up! This place is not linear.
You might be doing other work but you need to learn to farm out your work between different disciplines and projects and time-manage it.
I expect the presentations to come in.
Somebody was saying: It will be shabby.
So be it.
Shabby is shabby. Cool is cool.
We will differentiate the boys from the men in this manner.
Cheerio.

WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?
I. THE TEAMS
Here are the groups that you have decided upon. Work closely together and you will see exciting results.
Group 1 - PALLAVI, SOMESH, ARJUN
Group 2 - PIA, SHYAMLI, SAMIA
Group 3 - HAZEL, PRIYAM, KHUSHBOO
Group 4 - GOVIND, DHANYAA, RUCHIKA
Group 5 - TARIQ, NIKHIL, BHARAT
II. THE TASK
The task ahead of each group for Saturday March 31 is:
Come up with a strong and well-researched, well-organised presentation that deals with the following two aspects:
Analyze
a. Animism, foundations of a belief system
b. How it has Influenced practice in design
Let your research be powerfully VISUAL in nature, with appropriate NOTES.
When you look at animism, connect it to cultures that practice it and THEIR ARTEFACTS. So collect images of artefacts and see how the belief has been manifested in which way in the design of these artifacts.
Then go on into modern artefacts in whose design you see aspects of animism manifesting.
You must try to come up with varied understandings of how you see animism as having contributed to the design of these artefacts.
Don't panic about level of understanding - just dig deep into the subject, live it and breathe it and analyse it in terms of artefacts.
Also, each presentation must SOURCE its material. For instance, if you have taken an excerpt from some Internet article - footnote it in the presentation. Or have a bibliography slide where the name of the book and author and publisher, or title of article and magazine in which it appeared and date of publication, or URL are recorded. This helps others to reference the same material you have come upon.
Let's get rockin' and rollin'. Ciao!

MARCH 23,26 - PRESENTATIONS WITH REMY BOURGANEL
Remy Bourganel of Nokia Research Lab
March 23 and March 26 saw the 15 students in the Only Planet Project make their presentations before Remy Bourganel of Nokia Research Lab (Insight and Innovation). The presentations went off well.
Pallavi presents her work to Remy, Jan Blom
NOKIA ONLY PLANET PROJECT - PHASE I
NOKIA ONLY PLANET PROJECT
PHASE ONE
How do belief systems affect artifacts?
TASK ONE
(a) Articulate your personal belief system in images/materials/sounds/words
(b) Make an inventory of your personal artefacts. (cultural inventory)
(c) Can you co-relate the two? How?
(d) Can you find “organizing principles”?
Lifestyle is embodiment of belief system.
My-ness.
Begin with self – connect to the world – what are the concentric circles moving from self outwards? – What are the artefacts that attract you and repel you? Why? What are the spaces in which they are located – what are the behaviours and relationships you have with artifacts?
TASK 2
List all your artifacts. Do it visually - place them on a five point scale between:
1. Public me and Private me
2. Means a lot to me and Doesn’t mean much to me
3. It gives me something or It takes something from me
4. Multi-dimensional or uni-dimensional (facets)
5. Has its own will/life or It doesn’t have its own will/life
6. Eternal/Timeless or Temporary/Transient
7. Easy to befriend or Difficult to befriend
Of these, the first three are linked to yourself. The last four are what you think of the object per se.
TASK THREE
Make a digital presentation which clearly maps:
1. Your space
2. Your artefacts (list them visually and help with useful text)
3. How do you categorise your artefacts?
4. Co-relate at least five aspects of your belief system with the artefacts that reflect them.
TASK FOUR
1. Take your first-level presentations up another level.
2. What is culture? Walter Benjamin. (Research briefly, understand)
3. What is my culture if I say I am "Indian"? (Figure it out.)
4. Find an artefact in your room, home, wherever, that leads you out into Indian culture.
5. Thorough this artefact, trace your way to at least 5 "essences" of Indian culture. Do not forget to look at materials, colours, textures, rituals, beliefs, finishes, nature-based artefacts, decorative aspects, manifestation in arts, etc.
6. Do you reflect these essences in any way (in terms of your artefacts, dress, behaviour, ritual, whatever)?
7. Make your presentation visual with appropriate text.
